Tropes/Info: small town, romantic suspense, dual pov, slow burn, protective hero, dislike to love
While I’m (im)patiently waiting for Glimmers of You to come out in August, I have decided to make my way through Catherine Cowles’s backlist, starting with the Tattered & Torn series.
I recently finished book one, Tattered Stars, and I enjoyed it a lot! Catherine Cowles is phenomenal at writing romantic suspense. Tattered Stars kept me on my toes, pulled me into the fictional town of Wolf Gap, and had me rooting for the main love interests, Everly and Hayes.
I particularly enjoyed that Everly was a strong, badass female lead. She had a rough childhood, and my heart hurt for her throughout the book. Despite her upbringing, or maybe because of it, she didn’t take any BS from people and stood her ground. It was rough seeing how people treated her at the beginning of the book and how her family treated her throughout the book.
I had a love/hate relationship with Hayes at first. I completely understood where he came from, but he was a jerk. I loved seeing him come around and loved his personality and protective nature came through during the remainder of the book.
There were moments when their love story was too slow for me. That said, I think the build-up was necessary. And it would have been unrealistic for them to have gotten together sooner, given their history. Also, the build-up made their eventual relationship SO worth it.
I loved that the characters (including the side characters) were well-developed. I felt like I knew them, which is something you don’t always get in books. Overall, Tattered Stars was a lovely book to pick up and escape into each night over a few days.
I’m excited to continue the series!
